Alteration in the number of members[edit | edit source]

Subject to this Constitution, the Parliament may make laws for increasing or diminishing the number of the members of the House of Ordinaries.

Note: The diminution of the number of members is entrenched matter: see entrenchment 2.1 (in the table in clause 1 of Schedule 2).

Relevant note from the Explanatory Memorandum[edit | edit source]

122. This section, based on the corresponding section of the Australian Constitution, provides for the alteration of the number of members by the Parliament. There is an explanatory note that describes the diminution of the number of members as an entrenched matter under entrenchment 2.1.
