Absence of Speaker
(1) Before or during any absence of the Speaker, the House of Ordinaries may choose a member to perform the Speaker’s duties in the Speaker’s absence.
(2) The same qualifications and terms of office applying to the Speaker apply to the legislative director exercising the Speaker’s duties for the time being.
Relevant note from the Explanatory Memorandum
137. This section is based on the corresponding section of the Australian Constitution allowing for the election of an acting Speaker of the House of Ordinaries. It also provides the same qualifications apply to the person exercising the Speaker’s duties for the time being.
